World’s Largest Coal-to-Chemicals Project | Shanghai Hysunny Delivers Desalinated Water Treatment System Equipment

Recently, the desalinated water treatment system equipment supplied by Shanghai Hysunny Hi-Tech Materials Co., Ltd. (“Shanghai Hysunny”) for the Shaanxi Coal Industry Yulin Chemical 15 million t/y Coal Classification, Clean and Efficient Conversion Demonstration Project – Olefins, Aromatics and Further Processing Project has been fully manufactured and delivered. As a core process unit of the desalinated water plant, the system is responsible for efficiently removing dissolved salts, organic matter, colloids and other impurities from raw water, providing continuous, stable and reliable process water for the plant’s production units.

The system consists of high-pressure pumps, reverse osmosis membrane modules, online instrumentation and control systems, and other components. After pretreatment, the raw water is pressurized to the designed operating pressure by the high-pressure pumps and then enters the reverse osmosis membrane modules. Driven by pressure, water molecules pass through the selectively permeable membranes to form permeate, while most dissolved salts, organic matter and microorganisms are retained on the other side of the membranes and discharged with the concentrate. The system adopts a multi-stage series configuration to effectively balance the operating flux and fouling tendency of the membrane modules at each stage. It is also equipped with online permeate flow meters, concentrate flow meters and permeate conductivity meters to continuously monitor and provide feedback on permeate quality and overall system recovery. The reverse osmosis permeate then enters the downstream demineralization system for further treatment, ultimately producing desalinated water that meets the water quality requirements for boiler make-up water. The system achieves a recovery rate of no less than 75% and a stable desalination rate of over 98%, with all effluent parameters meeting the designed product water quality requirements of the desalinated water plant.

Project Overview

The Shaanxi Coal Industry Yulin Chemical 15 million t/y Coal Classification, Clean and Efficient Conversion Demonstration Project is located in Yulin, Shaanxi Province, and is the world’s largest coal-to-chemicals project currently under construction. With a total investment of RMB 231.5 billion and a site area of 16.3 square kilometers, it is also the largest single chemical project approved in one batch since the establishment of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China.

The Olefins, Aromatics and Further Processing Project supplied by Shanghai Hysunny is part of the project’s Phase II development. Building on the Phase I project, it further expands and extends the industrial chain through the integrated application of coal pyrolysis, coal/semi-coke gasification and downstream processing technologies, while exploring new pathways for the integrated development of coal-based olefins and coal-based aromatics. The first-stage Phase II project covers approximately 9,200 mu, with an estimated total investment of about RMB 62 billion. It includes nine 3,500 t/d-scale aerospace gasifiers, together with large-scale coal-to-methanol and methanol-to-olefins units, and is designed to produce a total of 2.77 million tonnes per year across eight categories of high-end products, including polyethylene and polypropylene. Upon full completion of the project, total product output is expected to reach 9.6 million tonnes, with projected sales revenue of RMB 130 billion and profits exceeding RMB 30 billion.

The construction of the Shaanxi Coal Industry Yulin Chemical 15 million t/y Coal Classification, Clean and Efficient Conversion Demonstration Project is of significant importance to the industrial upgrading of the Northern Shaanxi energy and chemical industry base and to Shaanxi’s efforts to develop a trillion-yuan modern energy industry cluster. Looking ahead, Shanghai Hysunny will continue to focus on the energy and chemical industry, providing integrated solutions that combine intelligent equipment manufacturing with AI technologies for applications including chemical water treatment and power transmission and distribution, supporting the safe, stable and efficient operation of water systems in large-scale energy and chemical projects.
